The soot blower tube is an important component of the soot blower. The life span of tube is determined by materials selections and the design of tube. It is important to use materials that has good high temperature strength, oxidation resistance and corrosion resistance for the long blowing tube. Moreover, the material requirements should be graded according to different temperature use.

The allowable operating temperature of the soot blower tube material is as follows:


For high temperature and corrosive environments, there are certain materials can be used, for example:  high chromium nickel stainless steels such as 304, 321, 316L, 310S, etc.

Optimized design of the soot blower tube: The outer diameter of the tube is generally as Φ60, Φ76, Φ89, Φ102, Φ114, etc. Since the soot blower tube works as a cantilever beam when the tube is extended, the cantilever beam deflection is calculated as follows:

As can be seen from the above formula, the method of reducing the deflection of cantilever beam is as follows:

  1. Appropriately increase the tube diameter, that is, to increase the second moment of area to reduce the deflection.
  2. Have sufficient media flow to reduce the temperature, maintain material strength and increase modulus of elasticity to reduce the deflection.
  3. In the stroke section of the tube, different materials and different wall thicknesses are used depending on the temperature and load.
  4. Under the premise of ensuring the minimum deflection of the tube, the steel tube used should be made as small as possible, so that the weight of the tube can be reduced as well as the deflection. Moreover, the material is saved, the cost is decreased.
  5. Quality control of the soot blower tube:

Because the long soot blower tube is a component that is subject to high temperature, internal pressure and self-rotation. It causes thermal stress and high temperature flue gas corrosion during start-stop and operation, and there are different types of steel welding in the structure. So the selection, manufacture and inspection of materials, such as the structure of the weld, welding process, heat treatment, non-destructive inspection, etc., must strictly comply with the relevant standards to ensure the reliability of use.
